On October 21, a month after the International Day of Peace, Sept 21, Barstow Memorial School and Chittenden Public Library planted a Peace Pole and joined the International Peace Pole Project. The Peace Pole was begun last spring as part of a Vermont Community Foundation Spark Grant in Chittenden, Vermont. Students in the Helping Hands Club with Nicole Vachon Hanlon had begun the pole and introduced it to the community at a Music on the Green Celebration in May 2022. This fall Agents for Peace students completed the Pole with art teacher Jen Hogan, Barstow librarian Erin Bodin and Nicole the Chittenden Public Library Director. The students planted it and then presented it as part of an assembly program with the entire school. The celebration included planting the pole, sharing the “May Peace Prevail on Earth” message in English, Spanish, French and Mohican. Then with the Agents of Peace students leading, the assembly included poetry, music, poppy and recycled plastic flower planting. As the finale all students gathered in the field to create a large peace symbol which was photographed by a drone from our local Baird Farm. All the students and teachers planted the Peace Pole and formed the giant peace sign as symbols of the community’s desire to be agents for peace, pollinators spreading the message that began over fifty years ago in Japan with over 200, 000 poles around the world.
We will continue to be pollinators by planting a pollinator garden around the pole with help of gardeners in the community in the Spring. Stay tuned for our continued efforts of peace. If you are interested in more information about Peace Poles go to peacepoleproject.org

October ended with Vision Boarding to celebrate Happy Samhain/Soween and Trick or Treating at the library!
Molly Hooker Hatfield helped clean up the fireplace so we decided to dress up the loveseat as a Library Lion! Just looking for seamstress help to make it a more sustainable slip cover! It was a perfect costume to welcome our Trick or Treaters at the Library!!
Our annual appeal started November 2. Hope that you know we really appreciate you and everything that you give us to support all that we do at the Chittenden Public Library. If you didn’t receive a letter and would like to support us you can go to the donate button at the bottom of the Website Page for a tax exempt donation or contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info. THANK YOU!!!
November 5 is our Story and Craft Hour from 10-11am with guest readers ~ The Stephenson’s! Bring your favorite stuffed animal friends and find out why Bear Says Thanks and then help us create a gratitude tree for the Library! We are in costume mode so we are transforming a book shelf into a tree! Think of what you are thankful for and make branches on our Birch Blessing Tree!
Check out our new display categories to find something fun to read!
Slender bookshelves – we would like to make some more slender bookshelves for the end of the shelves to use for display so we could have more than one shelf for our highlighted areas! We need wood, if anyone has some extra wood that we could make 4 narrow book case displays we would appreciate it. We have talked with Stafford Creative Construction and they are willing to help us build if we can get materials!
Contact us if you have materials or can help in anyway! email@example.com
